GEO GlossaryGEO Terms A–Z
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is about making content discoverable, understandable and citable for AI-powered search and answer engines. This section collects concepts such as entities, knowledge graphs, structured data, citations and AI crawlers.
GEO does not replace SEO; it builds on foundations like crawlability and indexability. The definitions avoid unverifiable claims about the internals of generative engines.
Searches term names and alternate names; on category pages also the short definitions.
A
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is an industry term for work aimed at getting content used as the source in systems that answer questions directly: featured snippets, voice assistants and AI-powered search answers. It is not a standard defined by any official body, and it overlaps heavily with GEO, featured snippet optimization and conventional SEO rather than replacing them.Core · GEO
- AI CitationAn AI citation is a link, footnote or source card in an answer generated by an AI-powered search or answer system that shows which web page the information came from. Citations let users verify claims and are the main route by which websites gain visibility and traffic from AI answers. Being selected as a cited source is never guaranteed.Core · GEO · AI Visibility
- AI CrawlerAn AI crawler is a bot operated by an AI company that visits web pages and retrieves their content. AI crawlers serve three main purposes: collecting content for model training (GPTBot, ClaudeBot), building an index for AI search (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot), and fetching a page on demand when a user asks (ChatGPT-User). Most can be managed with robots.txt rules.Core · GEO · AI Visibility
- AI Mode (Google)AI Mode is a conversational AI search experience offered as a separate tab in Google Search. It breaks complex, multi-part questions into subtopics, runs searches for them simultaneously and combines the findings into one response with links to supporting websites, and it lets users ask follow-up questions. It started as a Labs experiment in March 2025 and opened to everyone in the US in May 2025.Professional · SEO · GEO
- AI OverviewsAI Overviews is a Google Search feature that shows an AI-generated summary, together with links to supporting web pages, above the regular results for some queries. It began in 2023 as the Search Labs experiment SGE (Search Generative Experience) and rolled out to all users in the United States in May 2024. It appears only when Google's systems judge that it adds value beyond classic results.Core · SEO · GEO
- AI SearchAI search is a search experience that responds to a question with an answer written by a large language model instead of only a list of links. The system typically breaks the question into several searches, retrieves relevant web pages and presents a synthesized answer together with source links. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity are examples.Core · GEO · AI Visibility
- AI Share of VoiceAI share of voice is a measure of how much space a brand takes up, relative to the competitors being tracked, in the answers AI systems give to a defined set of questions. It is usually calculated as the brand's mentions or citations divided by the total for all tracked brands in the same answers. Because answers vary from run to run, it is estimated by sampling rather than measured exactly.Advanced · GEO · AI Visibility
- AI VisibilityAI visibility describes how often a brand is mentioned, how accurately it is described and whether it is cited as a source in answers from AI-powered systems such as ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity or Claude. Because these answers vary from one run to the next, it is measured by repeatedly sampling a set of prompts rather than by a single ranking.Core · GEO · AI Visibility
- Answer ExtractabilityAnswer extractability is how easily search engines and AI systems can locate information on a page and lift it out as a correct, self-contained answer. Passages that answer the question in their first sentence, clear headings, definitions, lists and tables all improve it. It does not guarantee a citation, but it makes content a more suitable candidate for being quoted.Professional · GEO
- Applebot-ExtendedApplebot-Extended is a secondary user agent Apple recognizes in robots.txt that lets web publishers opt out of their content being used to train Apple's general-purpose foundation models, which power generative AI features across Apple products including Apple Intelligence. According to Apple, Applebot-Extended does not crawl web pages; it only determines how data crawled by Applebot may be used, and disallowing it does not remove pages from search results.Professional · GEO
- Article SchemaArticle schema is structured data that describes a news story, blog post or article page using schema.org's Article, NewsArticle or BlogPosting types. It states the headline, authors, publication and modification dates and images explicitly. Google says it helps show better title text, images and date information for the article in search results. It has no required properties.Professional · SEO · GEO
B
- Bing Webmaster ToolsBing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free toolset that shows site owners how Bing crawls, indexes and ranks their site. Besides search performance, URL inspection, sitemaps, IndexNow submission, backlink and keyword data, it includes AI Performance, which reports how often the site is cited as a source in Microsoft Copilot and AI-generated answers in Bing.Professional · SEO · GEO
- BingbotBingbot is Microsoft's main web crawler for the Bing search engine. It identifies itself with a user-agent containing bingbot/2.0, renders pages with an engine based on the latest stable Microsoft Edge, and obeys the bingbot token in robots.txt. Because Microsoft Copilot uses the Bing search service when it needs web information, content Bingbot crawls can also become a source for those answers.Professional · SEO · GEO
- Bot AccessibilityBot accessibility is whether search engine and AI bots can actually reach a site's pages and read their content. Beyond robots.txt permissions, it covers firewall and bot-protection blocks, HTTP status codes, rate limiting, and whether content only appears after JavaScript runs. A bot that robots.txt allows can still see nothing if it is stopped at any one of these layers.Professional · GEO
- Brand MentionA brand mention is any reference to a brand, product or organisation by name on a source other than its own website, such as a news article, blog, forum, social post, video or podcast. It may or may not include a link; one without a link is called an unlinked mention. Mentions show how and in what context a brand is discussed, and they are one of the sources from which AI systems learn about it.Professional · SEO · GEO
C
- CCBot (Common Crawl)CCBot is the web crawler run by the Common Crawl Foundation, a non-profit that publishes a free, open archive of web pages. That archive is a major raw source for many large language model training datasets. CCBot identifies itself with the CCBot/2.0 user agent and follows robots.txt rules, including the Crawl-delay directive.Professional · GEO
- ChatGPT-UserChatGPT-User is the user agent OpenAI uses for certain user-initiated actions in ChatGPT and Custom GPTs; when someone asks a question, ChatGPT may visit a web page under this name. According to OpenAI, it is not used to crawl the web automatically, robots.txt rules may not apply because a user started the action, and it does not determine whether content can appear in ChatGPT search.Professional · GEO
- Citation ReadinessCitation readiness describes how well a web page meets the preconditions for being selected and shown as a source by AI-powered search and answer systems. It covers access for crawlers, passages that make sense on their own, claims backed by named sources, a proper reference section and a clearly identified publisher. Readiness does not guarantee that a page will be cited; it only removes the obstacles to being a candidate.Professional · GEO
- Claude-SearchBotClaude-SearchBot is the Anthropic bot that navigates the web and analyzes online content to improve the quality of search results for Claude users. According to Anthropic, blocking it prevents content from being indexed for search optimization and may reduce a site's visibility and accuracy in user search results. It is managed separately from ClaudeBot, which collects training data, and Claude-User, which fetches pages on request.Professional · GEO
- Claude-UserClaude-User is the user agent Anthropic uses to support Claude users: when someone asks Claude a question, Claude may access websites under this name. According to Anthropic, Claude-User lets site owners control which sites these user-initiated requests can reach. Disabling it prevents content from being retrieved in response to user queries and may reduce visibility in user-directed web search.Professional · GEO
- ClaudeBotClaudeBot is Anthropic's web crawler for collecting content that could contribute to training its generative AI models. Disallowing ClaudeBot in robots.txt signals that a site's future content should be excluded from Anthropic's training datasets. Anthropic runs separate bots for other purposes: Claude-User for user-initiated requests and Claude-SearchBot for search quality.Professional · GEO
- Content FreshnessContent freshness is how recent the information on a page is and how clearly that recency is communicated to readers and machines. Google's 'query deserves freshness' systems surface newer content for queries where up-to-date information is expected; for queries where it is not, being new is no advantage by itself. In AI-generated answers the same idea appears as source freshness.Professional · SEO · GEO

E
- E-E-A-TE-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust, the concepts Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines use to assess page quality. Trust sits at the centre and is the most important of the four. According to Google, E-E-A-T itself is not a specific ranking factor; its automated systems use a mix of signals to identify content that demonstrates these qualities.Core · SEO · GEO
- EntityAn entity is something that search engines and AI systems recognize as a single, distinguishable thing: a person, company, product, place or concept. Entities are identified by their identity and attributes rather than by the words used to name them. Consistent naming, structured data and sameAs links help systems merge different spellings into one entity and keep similarly named entities apart.Core · SEO · GEO · AI Visibility
- Entity DisambiguationEntity disambiguation is the task of choosing the correct real-world entity when a name in a text could refer to several, for example deciding whether "Mercury" means the planet, the chemical element or the singer. Systems rely on surrounding context, candidate lists and persistent identifiers such as Wikidata QIDs. It is the core decision step in entity linking and closely related to entity resolution.Advanced · GEO · AI Visibility
- Entity SalienceEntity salience is a measure of how central each entity mentioned in a text is to that text as a whole: the entity the piece is really about scores high, one mentioned in passing scores low. Version 1 of Google Cloud's Natural Language API returns it as a score between 0 and 1 for each entity. Google has not documented salience as a ranking signal in Google Search.Advanced · GEO
- Entity-Based ContentEntity-based content is an approach that organises a page around real-world entities rather than keyword strings. People, organisations, products, places and concepts are named explicitly, and their attributes and relationships are stated in plain sentences. The aim is for search engines and language models to understand without ambiguity what, and whom, a page is about.Professional · GEO
F
- FAQ Schema (FAQPage)FAQ schema is structured data that marks up a page's frequently asked questions with schema.org's FAQPage, Question and Answer types; every question and answer must match text visible on the page. In 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health sites, and from 7 May 2026 it stopped showing this rich result type in Google Search altogether.Professional · SEO · GEO
- Featured SnippetA featured snippet is a search result format in which Google shows an excerpt from a page it judges to answer the query well, placing the text before the page title in a prominent box on the results page. Pages are selected automatically by Google's systems; no markup can request it. Site owners can only restrict it with nosnippet, max-snippet or data-nosnippet.Professional · SEO · GEO
G
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of helping a brand and its content be understood correctly, mentioned and cited as a source in answers produced by AI-powered search and answer systems. It builds on SEO fundamentals such as crawlability and indexing, and focuses on clarity, consistent entity information and quotable content. No technique can guarantee inclusion in AI-generated answers.Core · GEO · AI Visibility
- Google-ExtendedGoogle-Extended is a robots.txt product token that lets site owners control whether content Google crawls may be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and the Vertex AI API for Gemini. It is not a separate crawler. Google states that it does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal.Professional · GEO
- GPTBotGPTBot is OpenAI's web crawler for collecting content that may be used to train its generative AI foundation models. Disallowing GPTBot in robots.txt indicates that a site's content should not be used for that training. Visibility in ChatGPT search is governed by a separate user agent, OAI-SearchBot, and the two are controlled independently.Professional · GEO
- GroundingGrounding is the practice of making a language model base its answer on verifiable sources supplied at answer time — web results, documents or database records — rather than only on what it learned during training. The aim is to keep answers current and checkable and to reduce the risk of fabricated information. A grounded answer usually shows the sources it relied on.Professional · GEO · AI Visibility

- Knowledge GraphA knowledge graph is a data structure that stores entities such as people, organizations, places and concepts as nodes, and the relationships between them as edges. Search engines and AI systems use it to work out which entity a query refers to and to look up facts about it. Google's knowledge panels in search results are drawn from its Knowledge Graph.Professional · SEO · GEO
- Knowledge PanelA knowledge panel is the information box Google shows on the results page when someone searches for a person, organisation, place or thing that exists in its Knowledge Graph, giving a quick summary of facts about that entity. Panels are generated automatically from sources across the web, data partners and edits suggested by verified entities, and an official representative can claim a panel to suggest changes.Professional · SEO · GEO

N
- Named Entity Recognition (NER)Named entity recognition (NER) is the natural language processing task of finding names and similar expressions in text and sorting them into predefined types such as person, organisation, location, date, product or monetary amount. In “Maria Lopez opened the Leeds office in March”, Maria Lopez is a person, Leeds a location and March a date. NER is usually the first step in how search engines and AI systems understand text in terms of entities.Advanced · GEO · AI Visibility
- NosnippetNosnippet is a robots directive that asks search engines not to show a text snippet or video preview for a page in search results. It applies to the whole page through a meta tag or the X-Robots-Tag header, while the data-nosnippet attribute excludes specific parts of the text. According to Google, nosnippet also stops content from being used as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.Professional · SEO · GEO
O
- OAI-SearchBotOAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's crawler for surfacing websites in ChatGPT's search features. It does not collect content for model training; that is GPTBot's job. Sites that disallow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. OpenAI recommends allowing it.Professional · GEO
- Organization SchemaOrganization schema is structured data that describes a company or institution with schema.org's Organization type: its name, website, logo, contact details, official identifiers and profiles on other platforms. Google can use it to understand the organisation and to decide which logo to show in search results and the knowledge panel. It has no required properties and usually lives on the home page or the about page.Professional · SEO · GEO
P
- Passage RetrievalPassage retrieval is a retrieval approach that finds and ranks paragraph- or section-sized passages within documents, rather than whole documents, in response to a query. AI search systems typically build their answers from such passages. Google also documents a passage ranking system that identifies individual sections of a web page to better understand how relevant the page is to a search.Advanced · GEO · AI Visibility
- People Also AskPeople Also Ask (PAA) is a Google search results feature that shows questions related to the original query as an expandable list; Google calls it a related questions group. Expanding a question reveals a featured snippet taken from a web page, with a link to the source. The questions are generated automatically, and site owners cannot control which ones appear.Professional · SEO · GEO
- Perplexity-UserPerplexity-User is the user agent that supports user actions within Perplexity: when someone asks a question, Perplexity may visit a web page to help provide an accurate answer and include a link to that page in its response. Perplexity says it is not used for web crawling or for collecting content to train AI foundation models, and because a user requested the fetch, it generally ignores robots.txt rules.Professional · GEO
- PerplexityBotPerplexityBot is Perplexity's crawler for surfacing and linking websites in Perplexity's search results. According to Perplexity, it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. A separate user agent, Perplexity-User, visits pages on demand when a user asks a question, and because the user requested the fetch, it generally ignores robots.txt rules.Professional · GEO
- ProfilePage SchemaProfilePage schema is schema.org markup stating that a page is a profile focused on a single person or organisation, which is described in the mainEntity property as a Person or Organization. Google uses it on sites where creators share their own perspectives, such as forums, social platforms and author pages on news sites, to better understand who produced the content.Advanced · SEO · GEO
Q
- Query ExpansionQuery expansion is an information retrieval technique in which a search system enriches the user's query with synonyms, word stems, spelling corrections, related terms or rewritten phrasings so that it can retrieve more relevant documents. Its purpose is to reduce missed results when the words a user types do not literally match the words used in the documents that answer the need.Advanced · SEO · GEO
- Query Fan-OutQuery fan-out is a technique in which an AI-powered search system turns one user question into multiple related queries about its subtopics, runs them concurrently and combines what they retrieve into a single response. Google describes it for AI Overviews and AI Mode as a way to reach a broader and more diverse set of sources than one search would return.Advanced · GEO

- sameAs PropertysameAs is a schema.org property that gives the URL of another web page which unambiguously indicates an item's identity, such as an organization's official social profiles, its Wikidata entry or its Wikipedia article. Used in structured data, it helps search engines and AI systems connect records on different websites to the same entity. Its value is a URL, and several links can be supplied as a list.Professional · SEO · GEO
- Schema.orgSchema.org is an open project that publishes a shared vocabulary of types and properties for describing entities and their relationships on web pages. It was launched in 2011 by Google, Bing and Yahoo, with Yandex joining shortly after. It defines types such as Organization, Product and Article, all descending from Thing, plus properties such as name, author and price, and can be expressed in JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa.Professional · SEO · GEO
- Search IntentSearch intent is the underlying goal behind a search query: what the person actually wants to achieve, such as learning something, reaching a specific website, comparing options before buying, or completing an action. Because search engines shape their results around this goal, matching intent is one of the basic conditions for a page to be visible.Core · SEO · GEO
- Semantic HTMLSemantic HTML is markup chosen for what content means rather than how it looks: nav for navigation, main for the primary content, h1 to h6 for headings, button for actions and an a element with an href for links. Because the structure and role of each part are stated in the code, browsers, screen readers, search engine crawlers and AI systems can understand the page without guessing from its visual styling.Core · SEO · GEO · Web Design
- Semantic TripleA semantic triple is a unit of data that records one fact as a subject, a predicate and an object, such as "Albert Einstein – place of birth – Ulm". It is the basic building block of the W3C's RDF data model. Linked together, triples form a knowledge graph in which entities are nodes and relationships are edges. Schema.org markup written in JSON-LD can also be read as a set of triples.Advanced · GEO · AI Visibility
- Source AuthoritySource authority is the degree to which a website, author or document is recognized as a trustworthy and competent source on a particular topic. Search engines and AI answer systems do not assess it with a single score but through a combination of signals such as links, mentions in other sources, original content, author expertise and consistency over time. Authority is topic-specific: a site strong in one field can be weak in another.Professional · GEO
- Source SelectionSource selection is the process by which an AI-powered search or answer system decides which web pages to read, which passages to take from them and which to display as sources when answering a question. It typically involves generating search queries, retrieving candidates, re-ranking them and picking the passages that fit in the model's context window. Providers document some prerequisites but not the weights or the details.Advanced · GEO · AI Visibility
- Structured Data (Schema Markup)Structured data is information on a page (a product, article, business or event, for example) marked up in a standardised format that search engines and other machines can interpret unambiguously. The most widely used vocabulary is schema.org, and Google recommends the JSON-LD format. Valid structured data can make a page eligible for rich results, but it does not guarantee that they will be shown.Core · SEO · GEO
T
- Topic ClusterA topic cluster is a content structure in which a pillar page covering a broad subject is connected by internal links to supporting pages that each explore one sub-question in depth. It helps visitors move through a subject and helps search engines understand how the pages relate. It is an editorial and information architecture model, not a Google ranking signal.Professional · SEO · GEO
- Topical AuthorityTopical authority is an SEO industry concept describing how a website becomes a go-to source on a subject by covering it comprehensively, consistently and credibly. It is associated with interlinked content clusters, thorough coverage of subtopics and external recognition. Google does not publish or expose a single 'topical authority' score for general web search.Professional · SEO · GEO
