What it does
What is a word counter for?
A word counter calculates how many words and characters a text contains. When you write a blog post, an essay, an abstract, a product description or a social post, it shows at a glance whether the text fits the length you need.
This tool counts as you type and shows six measures: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time. There is nothing to upload, no account and no button to press.
Character limits
Where does the character count matter?
Many platforms limit text by characters rather than words. A character counter helps you stay within those limits. Common examples:
- Page titles
- Search results truncate titles by pixel width; most titles of about 50–60 characters display in full.
- Meta descriptions
- Search engines show a snippet whose length varies by device; descriptions of about 150–160 characters usually display without being cut.
- SMS
- A single SMS carries up to 160 standard characters; with accented or non-Latin letters the limit often drops to 70.
- Social media
- Posts on X (Twitter) are limited to 280 characters on free accounts, and an Instagram bio to 150.
Method
How the numbers are calculated
Counting uses your browser’s Unicode text segmentation (Intl.Segmenter); older browsers without it use a fallback that applies the same rules. Accented letters, apostrophes and emoji are counted correctly.
- Words
- Every run of letters or digits is a word. Spellings joined by an apostrophe or a hyphen, such as “don’t” or “e-mail”, count as one word; emoji and punctuation are not words.
- Characters
- Every character you see counts once, including spaces and line breaks. Emoji built from several code points, such as skin tones or family emoji, also count as one character.
- Characters without spaces
- All characters except spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Sentences and paragraphs
- Sentences are split at full stops, question and exclamation marks and line breaks; every non-empty line is a paragraph. Abbreviations such as “Mr.” can add a sentence.
- Reading time
- Based on an average silent reading speed of 230 words per minute for English; the real time depends on the text and the reader.
FAQ
Word & character counter FAQ
Is the word counter free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up, account or e-mail address, and has no usage limit.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Your text is not sent to Doruva or any other server, is not stored, and is gone when you close the page.
Are spaces included in the character count?
The “Characters” count includes spaces and line breaks. The count without them is shown separately as “Characters without spaces”.
How many characters is an emoji?
Every emoji that appears as a single symbol counts as one character, including family and flag emoji made of several code points. Emoji are not counted as words. Some platforms count an emoji as two characters internally.
How is reading time calculated?
The word count is divided by an average reading speed of 230 words per minute. It is an estimate: technical texts are read more slowly, short and simple texts faster.
Why can results differ from Word or Google Docs?
Each program counts hyphenated words, e-mail addresses, numbers and abbreviations with slightly different rules. This tool follows Unicode text segmentation; differences usually come from such special spellings and are only a few words.
How are paragraphs counted?
Every non-empty line counts as a paragraph. Text copied from Word or Google Docs usually separates paragraphs with a single line break, so copied text is counted correctly too.
